Pieles II / Skins II consists of a nine oil painting´s serie made on canvas. Here I have been portrayed wearing different masks made out of fabric, designed and produced by myself.
The process of creation of each piece begins with a performative or a symbolic action, by taking the physical reality of the object (the mask) to a pictorial realm (the bidimensional plane of the image). Along this metamorphic route, the fabric stands for the human skin, which simultaneously defines and covers us. It is both the elemental raw material of one’s face and the surface on which its image is reflected.
Throughout this transition, the skin (or fabric) is modified, operated, replicated, marked, portrayed, exhibited, published, giving rise to different versions of my own self. They are new entities which kidnap the most superfluous subject that lives in me; which lock up the old copy of me and give way to other simulations of myself.
“Bringing various psychological aspects of the individual to life, thereby legitimizing hidden aspects of itself. Giving plasticity to the original mass that forms the whole identity, allowing the change and the transformation.”
